Description:
[2], 82, [1], 9, 11 folio leaves. 11 (out of 17) copper-engraved double-page maps; a few half-page engravings; illustrated title page. 13¼x9, old half calf and boards. First Latin Edition.
Large vignette of the New World on the extra engraved title page contains the first depiction of California as an island, and is thus the forerunner of De Bry and Briggs. -Tooley: MCS No. 8, p. 3. An important work also because it contains Jacob le Maire's 1615 Ephemerides Sive Descriptio Navigationis Australis Institutae, "the first edition of the genuine Voyage of Le Maire...as distinguished from that which had been through the Dutch East India Company's jealousy of Le Maire, published by Blaeu under the name of Cornelius Schouten, the Commander of one of Le Maire's vessels," -Cox I, p. 41. This account of the 1615 circumnavigation of the globe includes the discovery of Cape Horn and the Pacific Island groups. Containing the bookplate of Alvin and Ethel Seale's South Sea Library of SF dated 1936.
Condition:
Covers detached and heavily worn; endpapers with offsetting, front pastedown has ink inscription; map condition: No. 3 out of order, with tape mends to tears into map and tape near gutter of verso; small hole in unnumbered map affecting image; the lacking No. 2 map never bound in; a few pages with a marginal tape repair (which has yellowed); internally very good.
