Description:
8 lines, in ink. On sheet 15x18.2 cm. (6x7¼").
The Committee of the Pay Table directs treasurer John Lawrence to "Pay Col. Joshua Porter the Sum of One hundred and forty-three pounds fourteen shillings and nine pence money in Bills being for monys & expenses advanced... on service to Crown Point Ticonderoga... and charge the same to acct. of Colony Commt. June 6th, 1775." Signed by committee members William Pitkin, Thomas Seymour and Oliver Ellsworth; inscribed and signed in receipt of payment on verso by Porter, and docketed on verso. The document itself appears to be in Seymour's hand. Joshua Porter (1730-1825), a physician born in Lebanon, Connecticut, served in the Connecticut Militia and in other capacities during the Revolution, including superintending the manufacture of the first home-made cannonballs that were used during the war. A fine document concerning one of the important early actions in the American Revolution.
