513 (i.e. 543) pp. (a-z8, A-L8). Pages 353-368, and 435-449 repeated in numbering; page 401 lacking in numbering, but text is continuous and complete. Woodcut device on title page. (8vo) 16x9.5 cm. (6¼x3½"), 18th century full calf rebacked preserving original gilt spine, later morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. First Estienne Edition.
A fine copy of this Estienne edition of the 4th century Roman historian's history of the Roman empire. The 18 books of the Rerum Gestarum are the surviving portion of a work that originally extended to 31 books and cover the years 353 to 378. The introduction by Jacob Froben is dated 1533 and was originally printed in Froben's Basil edition of that year. Remarkably clean text beautifully printed using italic type throughout. Adams A972.
Condition:
Neatly rebacked and with corners restored; armorial bookplate of Chatsworth Library on front pastedown, bookplate of Bibliotheca Trautner-Falkiana to verso of front free endpaper, fine.
