Description:
[4], 992; 276, [4] pp. Separate title-page for the New Testament. Black letter. (4to) 10x7¾, period blind-ruled calf over wooden boards, two clasps. Second Saur Edition.
The second of three editions of Saur's Bible, printed in Germantown, Pennsylvania. It pre-dates any American edition of the Bible in English (not accomplished until Robert Aitken's edition in 1782). This is also the first Bible printed in America on American-made paper. Laid in this copy is an item of charming early calligraphy practice "Lewis LeRew" and a small folk drawing of a galloping horse in blue ink. Arndt & Eck, First Century of German Language Printing in the U.S.A., 269; Evans 9343.
Condition:
Mild rubbing to spine and clasps, one clasp with a 1" tear, small scuff to front cover, without endpapers; first five leaves loose and trimmed (first title-page and contents leaf trimmed down to about 8x6" with a little loss), first title-page with a small hole; final few gatherings with marginal insect wear, heavy and affecting the text in the last six leaves, these leaves trimmed and loose, lacking about seven words to final text leaf and the last two leaves well worn and small (about 6x7" each); expected browning and a little dampstain, closed tears to 3 leaves internally; still an impressive copy overall.
