Description:
5, [3] pp. text + 25 double-page hand-colored lithographed maps, one folding. 23.5x16 cm. (9¼x6¼"), original gilt-lettered cloth. First Edition.
Rare first edition of this interesting atlas, which includes some remarkable regional maps of the American West, including an early, if not the first, appearance of Montana on a map; an unusual New Mexico & Utah combination; and a strange Texas configuration with New Mexico's border extending nearly to the middle of Texas. The maps are derived from Colton's Map of the United States, and are similar to Colton's Illustrated Cabinet Atlas of 1859. Montana appears on the map of California and Idaho, which also includes Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. About half of the future state of Montana is shown. Pencil ownership to front flyleaf. Phillips Atlases 1387.
Condition:
Covers worn, top 2" of spine strip missing; hinges cracked and split, prelims. darkened and brittle with some chipping, title and other leaves detached, most maps very good, sold as is.
