JACKSON PHOTOGRAPHS THE MISSIONS

64. Jackson, William Henry. Series of thirty-nine albumen photographs of California Missions. Images 7x9-1/2 on original black card mounts, captioned & with "W.H.J. & Co." in the neagatives. Denver: c.1885-90

Important series of photographs of California's crumbling missions, containing one or more images of following missions: San Antonio, San Miguel, Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara, San Diego, San Juan, Delorew, San Carlos, San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano, San Luis Rey, and San Fernando. Jackson traveled far beyond his Denver base in the latter years of the nineteenth century. As he notes in his autobiography, Time Exposure, "As time went on, I found my pictures for the Denver & Rio Grande [Railroad] paying big dividends. Other roads asked me to photograph their routes, and I could now take my pick from year to year. Hotels were also beginning to understand the value of advertising their scenic attractions; and between 1885 and 1892 I carried my camera into every corner of the land, as well as through Canada. In the summers I covered such sections as the Gaspé, the Yellowstone, Colorado, upper New York, and the White Mountains. After cold weather set in I found myself busy in Mexico or California or Louisiana or Florida...." The images in the present set include both interior and exterior views (mostly the latter), with good detail of the architecture. A few with minor fading, generally fine, set in modern folding linen box.

Hoffman in distance; The Bridal Veil Fall, 940 feet high - Yo Semite Valley; and Ribbon Fall (1800 feet high) from the Valley. On yellow printed mounts. Boston: c.1870

Massachusetts photographer John P. Soule is most noted in California photographic history as providing the original photographs used to illustrate Samuel Kneeland's The Wonders of Yosemite Valley and California.
