A lone man with a beard, holding a small pick, stands upon the steaming, bubbling springs. This man is likely the artist Thomas Moran, who was in the famous "oldest existing photograph of Mammoth Hot Springs" pictured in Jackson's autobiography, Time Exposure. Both men are wearing the same rounded hat, but the subject in the latter photograph has his back to the camera. In the present photograph, he is standing with one hand on the side of the spring, gazing into the distance. Some soiling to mount; image very good with a little fading. (600/900)
