The text is probably one of the most interesting socio-political documents of any of the photogaphic books in this catalogue. Fine condition. (70/100).

Masterful photographs portraying the contemporary desert in a unique way - with hints of the styles of a broad variety of artists from Frederick Remington to Maynard Dixon and Salvador Dali. Starting his professional photography career as an idealist who failed to connect with the public when he used his camera purely as a tool of social commentary, he vowed to pursue his craft simply as art. It wasn't long, however, before he learned to combine the two in a visual statement that is both powerful and aesthetically unique. Fine condition. (50/80).

First printing. San Francisco: Bedford Arts, Publishers, [1990]. Photographer Mark Klett made his own 360 degree panorama of San Francisco in 1990. From historical information, he attempted to photograph the city from the same spot as Muybridge did in his 1878 large plate panorama [a year later than the first one which is offered for sale in the photograph section of this catalog - see item # 948]. The result is a stunning comparison of the San Francisco of the previous century with the city of today. Fine condition. (50/80).

The first provides a tourist's eye view of San Francisco - but that of a very sophisticated, photographically educated tourist eye - resulting in a number of unusual and elegant perspectives including a four-page fold-out frontispiece of the span of the Golden Gate Bridge with San Francisco in the background. The second provides a pilot's eye view of San Francisco with eloquent photographic studies of the vertical, horizontal and oblique patterns of San Francisco. Both in fine condition. (50/80).

First edition. New York: Museum of Modern Art, [1955]. This book was made for an elaborate and historic photographic exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955. Edward Steichen and an assistant spent three years sorting through one million photographs to create the exhibit and book. Although today cynics would be inclined to call the family of man a dysfunctional one, this exhibit was a brave attempt to show our commonality as well as our difference. Included is a corrected copy of the typescript for Lawrence Clark Powell's chapter on this book in his California Classics - signed and dated twice. Weston was the beneficiary of a Guggenheim fellowship that allowed him to travel the length and breadth of California in 1937 - 1939 to record his photographer's impressions of the landscape. Charis [Wilson] Weston accompanied him and wrote the text for this work which has become a "California classic". All in very fine condition. (200/300).

842. Weston, Edward. Correspondence. Two items: 1) A.L.S. [2] pp. 8-1/2x11, written in pencil on plain sheet of paper, undated. Laid in clear plastic protector. 2) A.PC.S. [1] p. 3-1/4x5-1/2, written in pencil on U. S. postal card and postmarked April 8, 1937. Laid in clear plastic protector. Postal card addressed to Eric & Jere Knight [Eric was an author best known for his book

Lassie Come Home]. Although the letter is in the form of a brief story without an addressee, it is evident from the content of the postcard and the A.L.S. that the letter was written to the same party as the postcard. The letter/story is titled "The Tragedy of E. K.'s Sitting - or the fumblings of a rotten photographer" at the top of the sheet. It then continues "First the light was not good, but we did fairly well despite - - And then I broke my thermometer. Decided I was smart enough to test with my hand. Developed another sitting first. Fine. Then Eric's - - - tragedy. Water too warm. Melted emulsion. Threw out over half of the total made. Who knows what big fish were lost. Of the remains, those indoors too hard boiled from hot developer. Can fix (reduce). But are any worthwhile? I'm too disgusted to judge - - Edward." The post card reads, "Dear Eric and Jere - Thanks for swell letter of felicitation & advice. It deserved a fitting answer. But we leave for Death Valley tomorrow [part of his travel in California on the Guggenheim fellowship], so you can imagine the rush. Too bad, but I destroyed all Eric's negatives. You didn't like and I didn't. So happy that the book went over - I prey [sic] for your success. Love from all of us - Edward." Both in fine condition. (400/600).
